The alternator regulator is the brain of the charging system. It monitors both battery and stator voltages and depending on the measured voltages, the regulator will adjust the amount of current to control the alternator output.
A Voltage regulator is designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage level. It controls the alternator output. The Lucas ACR alternator, like many alternators fitted to British cars has the voltage regulator mounted inside.
A Bosch alternator usually has an externally mounted regulator. An older car may have a dynamo instead of an alternator. A dynamo has a separate regulator (a control box)
